The Y Urges
Healthier Habits for Kids during Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
September is
National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and the Saratoga Regional
YMCA is reminding
parents about
the importance of incorporating regular physical activity and
healthier eating habits into their
children's
lives.
Childhood
obesity rates have soared over the last few decades. Nationally, 1 in
3 children is obese or overweight. More alarming, obesity puts
children at risk for chronic diseases usually seen in adults, such as
high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and type-2
diabetes. This health crisis sheds light on the need to provide
children and their parents with the resources and the support they
need, emphasizing that small steps can lead to big results to reverse
the trend.
According to
the CDC, at a young age, children learn to assimilate their parents'
health-related beliefs and
behaviors;
therefore, environment and genetics can contribute to childhood
obesity. In a family with 1
overweight
parent, the child has a 40% chance of becoming overweight. If both parents
are overweight, the risk increases to 80%. The overweight parent is
considerably more likely to diet and make disparaging remarks about
himself or herself in the presence of the obese child. These
behaviors model an unhealthy self concept for the child, which can
result in an inferior body image and low self-esteem. Therefore,
incorporating the family in ethical interventions for childhood
obesity is imperative.
One key to
fighting childhood obesity is prevention. Regular physical activity -
60 minutes a day for children - and nutritious foods like fruits,
vegetables and whole grains can lower children's chances of becoming
obese or overweight and developing chronic diseases. It's important
to note that 60 minutes of physical activity can be achieved through
a number of activities throughout the entire day - it doesn't have to
be done all at once. As a leading nonprofit strengthening community
through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,
the Y believes that getting kids and families more active and
allowing them to play is an important factor in improving their
health.
The Saratoga
Regional YMCA offers programs such as basketball, swimming,
gymnastics, tennis and health
and wellness
classes for children and families. These programs have helped youth
and families by providing
them with fun
activities to get everyone moving and improving their health and
well-being.
"At the
Saratoga Regional YMCA, we know that many families struggle to find
the time and resources to eat
healthier and
set aside time for physical activity every day," said Jim Letts,
CEO, Saratoga Regional YMCA. "So
we tailor our
programs to meet the needs of families in the community making
quality programming and healthier choices available."
During the
month of September, the Saratoga Regional YMCA will have several
activities going on at its branches, such as family nights, health
and wellness classes for kids and families and more. All events are
free and open to the public. Please visit www.saratogaregionalymca.org for more information and the schedule of events.

Putting in a full day at the office behind a desk for work
could mean more back and neck pain.
Sitting down too long can also lead to poor circulation.
Being office-bound doesn't have to mean being stagnant.
Some things you can do are simple chair exercises. Just
standing up and sitting down slowly and doing that about 10 or 12 times
just to get your heart rate going a little bit.
This gets you and your blood moving. Another tip:
You can lift your legs up and squeeze your quads, then
push, point and flex your foot.
A lot of people hold stress in their neck and shoulders.
Some good shoulder rolls are nice, breathing in, squeezing
your shoulder blades together and then retracting down.
Just throw in some standing leg raises for a mini
all-around workout.
Being at a desk job shouldn't cost you your health. A few
simple movements an keep both your body and mind active.

It's hot out! And that means we're sweating more,
therefore we should be hydrating more than usual. Hydrating properly
doesn't mean drinking a lot of whatever you can get your hands on.
Beverages high in sugars and caffeine work against your body's efforts
to remain hydrated and can leave you feeling sluggish in the summer
heat. Whether you're outside playing hide and seek, running, gardening,
riding your bike, or just hanging out by the pool, you should be
drinking water or an electrolyte replenishing sports drink to keep your
body functioning at its peak performance level. You can even get
creative and make popsicles or slushies using fruit flavored sports
drinks to make the experience a little more refreshing. Some fruits,
like watermelon and grapes, are also a great way to replenish fluids,
as they are high in water content...not to mention delicious! These
days, reusable water bottles come in every color, size, shape and
pattern that your kids won't mind toting around on the go.
So, go play, but remember to stop and hydrate along the
way!
